How is the price calculated?

Price per issue = (estimated opens ÷ 1,000) × CPM band, where estimated opens = subscribers × open rate. The band depends on niche and placement (for example B2B primary sponsor $40–$80 per 1,000 opens; dedicated sends run roughly double). Below 1,000 opens the band is floored at $25–$75 because sponsors are buying an introduction, not reach. Packages take 10% off for 4 issues and 20% off for 12, off the mid price.

Why price on opens instead of subscribers?

A sponsor pays for people who see the placement. Two newsletters with 5,000 subscribers at 25% and 55% opens are different products. Quoting per 1,000 opens also lets you show the sponsor a number they can verify from your ESP.

Where do the CPM bands come from?

They are starting ranges compiled from public 2026 sponsorship guidance (SponsorGap listings, Paved marketplace ranges, beehiiv ad-network rate guidance) and rates operators shared in r/Newsletters and r/Emailmarketing. They are not a quote. Your first three sponsors set your real rate; raise it when a slot sells out two issues in a row.

A sponsor offered $60 a year for my 570-subscriber newsletter. Is that fair?

At a 40% open rate that is about 228 opens per issue. $60 for 12 issues is $5 per issue, which is under any band and under the small-list floor. A fairer offer is $25–$75 per issue, sold as a 4-issue package, with a tracked link so the sponsor can see clicks.
